5/26/1960 newspaper article: "Despondent Man Found Dead in Car"
A Gary man was found dead in his car early today and deputy sheriffs said he took his own life. Deputies said Herschel Maurer, 43, of 4711 W. 11th Ave, left a note saying he had been despondent since he and his wife had separated. The motor of his car was running and a garden hose had been connected to the exhaust pipe, then stuck through a rear window. Carbon monoxide apparently caused Maurer's death, deputies said. A motorist, Robert Boyda of Crown Point, discovered the car in a field north of Crown Point. Survivors include the widow, Vina, who lives at 3650 W. Ridge Road. The body was taken to the Geisen Funeral Home in Glen Park.
